Lunchbox Theatre is well-known in Calgary, AB for its small-scale 60-minute plays and musical comedies. First opening in 1975, the non-profit theatre attracts a crowd for its “Lunchtime Theatre” plays, taking place in the span of a lunch break in the heart of downtown. Currently, Lunchbox theatre is lead by Artistic Producer Samantha MacDonald [1].Lunchbox Theatre produces 8 shows a season, including the Stage One Festival of New Canadian Works and the Emerging Director’s Showcase. During their lunchtime shows patrons are actively encouraged to bring and eat their lunch. As a theatre company, Lunchbox Theatre's goal is to focus on the development and production of original one-act plays by Canadian Playwrights[2]

History

Lunchbox Theatre was created in 1975 by Betty Gibb, Bartley and Margaret Bard, with the intent to present live theatre during the lunch hour to downtown shoppers and workers. Lunchbox Theatre is now recognized as one of the longest running noon hour theatre companies in Canada. Active for now over 40 years, an extensive archive of their work can be found documented at the Glenbow Museum. [3] Initially taking place in Calgary’s Bow-Valley Square, in 2008 Lunchbox Theatre relocated to its permanent theatre at 160 - 115 9 Avenue SE.
