Norm Foster is one of Canada’s most prolific playwrights, and the most produced. His popular plays include The Melville Boys, The Affection of May, and Hilda’s Yard.

Early Life & Education

Foster was born February 14th, 1949 in Newmarket, Ontario, and grew up in Toronto. He attended West Hill Collegiate Institute and then continued his studies at Centennial College in Toronto, followed by Confederation College in Thunder Bay. He studied Radio and Film.


Career

After graduating from Confederation College, Foster started his 25 year career in radio. He moved to Thunder Bay, then to Winnipeg and Kingston, and finally settled in Fredericton, New Brunswick. In 1980, he was introduced to theatre. He accompanied a friend to an audition for the play Harvey, and landed the role of Elwood P. Dowd. Two years later, Foster began to write his own plays. Foster’s first two plays, Sinners and The Melville Boys were both produced at Theatre New Brunswick, and directed by Malcolm Black.

Since then, Foster has written more than 50 plays, many of which have been translated into French and performed around the country, and he has continued to act.


Awards and Milestones

In 1995, Foster became the most produced playwright in Canada, with an average of 150 productions of his plays performed every year. He has been the most produced playwright for 20 years.

In 1998, he won the Los Angeles Drama-Logue Award for The Melville Boys

In 2009 he was nominated for the Premier's Award For Excellence in the Arts.

In 2012, Foster was nominated for the Arthur Ellis Award for his novel Watching Jeopardy, in the category of Best First Novel.

In 2016, Foster will be celebrated in St Catherine’s, with a festival in his name spanning 3 months. Starting in June, 3 of his plays will be performed for 3 weeks each at First Ontario Performing Arts Centre. The plays to be performed are On a First Name Basis, Here on the Flightpath, and Halfway to the North Pole.[1]
