About

Grindstone Theatre was formed in the fall of 2011 by Artistic Director, Byron Martin, to create new late night content at the Varscona Theatre. Grindstone’s flagship show, The 11 O’clock Number! The Improvised Musical, debuted January 11th, 2012 and ran every second week for its first season. After a well received initial season and following an Edmonton Fringe Festival run, the improvised musical began its second season turning to a weekly format. The show has now toured to the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and the New York Musical Improv Festival as well as a sold out run at the 2014 Edmonton Fringe Festival. Currently in it’s third season, The 11 O’clock Number! continues to attract attention for its unique form of musical comedy entertainment.

Aside from the weekly improv show, Grindstone Theatre is responsible for the monthly play reading, Edmonton Scene Study, which has been running since 2010. Each month actors, directors, writers, and theatre lovers are invited to share scenes from published plays, explore the vast world of theatre, and connect with fellow artists. The group is open to everyone and honors a special professional guest from the community to share their insights.

In January 2013, Grindstone teamed up with a variety of vocal artists and musicians to put on its first annual Winter Revue to celebrate the songs and themes of the winter season.

In April 2013, Grindstone mounted its first full scale musical production, HONK! The Ugly Duckling Musical, written by Anthony Drewe and George Stiles which is based on the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale of The Ugly Duckling. This uplifting musical garnered great reviews and heartfelt response from our audiences. Musical Director, Erik Mortimer, was nominated for a Sterling Award for Best Musical Direction.

In spring 2013, Grindstone registered as a Non-Profit Theatre Society. Extending into the corporate world, Grindstone has performed for The Liberal Party of Canada, Fountain Tire/United Way, Edmonton Potterwatch, HSBC, and Edmonton Children’s Dance Theatre.
