Firefly Theatre and Circus is an Edmonton-based physical theatre company, founded in 2001.

Mission

Our mission is to create and tour original and accessible physical theatre that combines the visceral and awe-inspiring response of the circus with the emotional response of the theatre.

Firefly Theatre is dedicated to the advancement of integrated arts and the art forms of theatre and circus. Committed to enriching the community, both locally and outside of Alberta, our mission is threefold; we create original works of performance-based art, we produce and perform circus and spectacle acts for events worldwide, and we educate and share with our community through our Aerial Arts Program.

Profile

Firefly Theatre performs on the ground and in the air, creating original live performances that fuse the genres of circus and theatre. Productions have taken place inside theatres, museums, convention centres and nightclubs, outside in squares and intersections, and in the air suspended from buildings. Firefly Theatre’s work is unique in Alberta and has been described as “spectacular and breathtaking,” The Sun, “stunningly beautiful,” See Magazine, “gorgeous and terrifying,” Vue Weekly, and “fresh, funny, neck-craning spectacles,” The Journal.

Firefly is known for thought-provoking thrills and stunning displays of athleticism and grace. Alberta’s award-winning Aerial Circus Performance Company has captivated audiences at festivals and events throughout North America and beyond, including the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C., the Pacific National Exhibition in Vancouver, WinterCity Festival in Toronto, five consecutive Grey Cup Festivals and Canada Day in London, England. Firefly has performed for three Albertan Premiers, two Lieutenant Governors, and one Prime Minister of Canada.

Firefly Theatre and Circus was founded in 2001 by John Ullyatt and Annie Dugan. Ms. Dugan is the Artistic Director of the company, and she is the founder and Program Director of the Aerial Arts Program (2004), Alberta's first school dedicated to aerial circus arts. The company has been honoured with a City of Edmonton Excellence Award in Arts and Culture and a Mayor’s Award for Innovative Artistic Direction.
