Life and Career

He studied theatre at York University as an undergraduate with studies in playwriting, directing, and devised work. While at York he undertook independent studies in Clown with John Turner and Karen Hines. In 1999 he met Christian Barry, and the two would go on to be ongoing collaborators. With Zachary Fraser, Angela Gasparetto, and Andrea Dymond, they formed Bunnies in the Headlights Theatre, which was later renamed 2b theatre company with Barry and Black as its artistic co-directors. From 2001-2003 he studied directing at the National Theatre School of Canada where he met and later married Ann-Marie Kerr. In 2007-08 Anthony spent a year as artist-in-residence at Necessary Angel mentoring under then-artistic director Daniel Brooks. He has performed his solo show Invisible Atom over 100 times in both English and French across Canada and internationally, including stops in Toronto, Nashville, Melbourne, Cork, Edinburgh, Auckland, and at festivals including Under The Radar (New York City), PuSh Festival (Vancouver), and the Sydney Festival (Australia). His play Homage sold out its world premiere run in Halifax, and toured to Luminato and Magnetic North Theatre Festival (both in Canada). His play When it Rains has toured across Canada, to LaMama experimental theatre club in New York City, and to the Edinburgh Fringe. In 2013 the original production, which he directed, was a finalist for the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Award.
