Alberta Theatre Projects
Alberta Theatre Projects (ATP) is a professional contemporary theatre company founded in 1972 and based at the Martha Cohen Theatre in Calgary, Alberta. ATP is led by Artistic Director Vanessa Porteous and Executive Director Vicki Stroich.
Alberta Theatre Projects plays a national leadership role in the development of new Canadian plays year-round through the Enbridge New Canadian Plays series. ATP is committed to fostering the development of young artists and audience members through their Youth Engagement initiatives[1]. The Exchange[2], a series of fun, friendly and lively events around the shows in ATP's season, is where audiences and artists meet and mingle to explore and celebrate the themes of the plays and the art of live theatre.

At Alberta Theatre Projects, our aim is to make life more beautiful by creating and producing great contemporary theatre from Canada and beyond. Our work is about what’s now, what’s new and what’s next. In the welcoming oval of the Martha Cohen Theatre in Calgary, we stretch as deep as life, as wide as the world.

Enbridge New Canadian Plays
Alberta Theatre Projects is a national leader in commissioning, developing and producing new work by Canadian playwrights each season through the Enbridge New Canadian Plays series. Plays are developed through an extensive workshop process, and ATP offers playwrights dramaturgical support throughout the writing and production phase.

History
- February 14, 1972 - Alberta Theatre Projects is created by Director Douglas Riske and Producer Lucille Wagner at the Canmore Opera House, a log cabin in Calgary’s Heritage Park. Their mandate was to produce new Canadian plays emphasizing prairie concerns to bring history alive for children. In it’s first four years, ATP produced 30 new Canadian scripts. - 1976 – ATP Playwrights and Dramaturgs attend the first Banff Playwrights Colony.
- 1977 – Waiting for the Parade by playwright-in-residence John Murrell premieres, is performed widely across the country and wins a Chalmers Award.
- 1983 – Michael Dobbin is named Producing Director of Alberta Theatre Projects.
- 1985 – Martha Cohen Theatre becomes Alberta Theatre Projects new home in the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts.
- 1988 – ATP’s very first playRites Festival of new Canadian plays is a leading arts event during the Calgary Olympics.
- 1989 – Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love by Brad Fraser premieres at ATP’s playRites Festival.
- 1999 – Bob White becomes ATP’s Artistic Director.
- 2002 – Mary’s Wedding by Stephen Massicotte premieres at ATP’s playRites Festival, and the smash-hit play is produced across Canada and internationally, translated into three languages, and adapted into an Opera.
- 2007 – The December Man (L'homme de décembre) by Colleen Murphy premieres at ATP’s playRites Festival, winning the Governor General’s Award for Drama.
- 2007 – ATP’s playRites Festival expands to include a STAGE 2 for theatre that pushes new boundaries.
- 2009 – Vanessa Porteous becomes ATP’s Artistic Director.
- 2014 – The 28th and final edition of the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays. To date, the Festival has premiered 115 new works by Canada’s greatest playwrights.
