Évelyne de la Chenelière (born 1975) is a Quebecois writer and actor. She is best known for her plays Des fraises en janvier, Bashir Lazhar, Désordre public, and Les Pieds des anges.

Life and Career

She was born in Montreal, Quebec. She rose to prominence when her 1999 play, Les fraises en janvier, was produced by the Montreal companies Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui and Compagnie Jean Duceppe. It went on to be translated into English, German, and Scottish and presented in Edinburg's Festival Fringe. [1]. Many of her later plays proceeded to be produced in Montreal and elsewhere and translated into several languages. [2] She produced three plays with Nouveau Théâtre Expérimental: Henri & Margaux in 2002, Nicht retour, mademoiselle in 2004 and Aphrodite en 04 in 2005. [1] She then developed Aphrodite en 04 into Désordre public, which went up with Espace Go in 2006 [1] and proceeded to win the Governer General's Award for French-language Drama. [3]

She went on to collect a few more Governer General nominations over the years [3], as well as the Festival of French-language Radio Dramas Grand Prize for her 2009 play Les Pieds des anges. [2] In 2011, her play Bashir Lazhar was adapted into the feature film Monsieur Lazhar, and her play L'Imposture into the short Léo. Monsieur Lazhar was then nominated for an Academy Award and won many other awards around the world.[4] In the same year, she released her first novel La concordance des temps, a profound tale about suicide, which was adapted to film in 2014. In 2013, she helped pen a couple of original screenplays, Crée-moi, crée-moi pas and Une vie pour deux. She also been acting for film and television since 2004.

Évelyne has been praised for the sophisticated, philosophical nature of her work, which is often dark and often questions the human condition.
